Before the new provincial boundaries, Luanda had nine municipalities.

In the new division Luanda has seven municipalities. The territory is larger that before. The new municipalities of Luanda are: Cazenga; Cacuaco; Belas; Luanda, Quissama; Icolo e Bengo and Viana.

According to the new territorial organization the following municipalities form the current municipality of Luanda: Sambizanga, Rangel, Maianga, Ingombota and Samba. Luanda is the most populated municipality and Quissama is the largest municipality with the territorial extension.
